Site analysis and preliminary concept design was completed for this coastal lookout on the Porterfield Trail, near the village of Whitford in East Auckland. Forming a natural promontory at the head of the Waikopua Estuary, the site commands significant views across the Waitemata Harbour, and lies adjacent a large block of rural pasture. Extensive site analysis was completed into everything from local site history as an important trade route, to existing landscape character and materiality.
Using the existing fence grid pattern as a point of reference, a sequence of small design interventions has been designed along an extended footpath around the site periphery. These interventions, inspired by tidal drift and deposition, showcase the unique nature of the rural estuarine edge.
Custom designed seat and deck structures feature alongside clusters of wire gabions containing driftwood and collected site materials. Provision has also been made for posts and partial fences to allow riders to tie up their horses. The planting scheme makes subtle use of native flaxes, grasses, and other ground covers to shape distinctive spaces within the site.
