Abbeville Estate
The Estate encompasses 11 hectares of pasture, mature trees and landscaped grounds and involved the restoration of four heritage buildings that hold significant value to the history of Mangere. These including the 1850s Abbeville homestead (house and barn), the 1855 Westney house and the 1856 Westney Methodist Church – the latter two buildings relocated on to the site. The landscape design process sought to establish a framework of spaces that provided an appropriate setting for all buildings whilst also melding together the existing and new elements. The aim being to ensure that the venue could function in a harmonious manner, allow the individual buildings to ‘speak’ to one another across the landscape and each purvey their unique character. The framework and outline concept design was translated into detail through a limited palette of hard landscape materials. The combination of which, offer the scale and usability for a range of functions but also maintain the feeling of a low impact rural/residential environment. A strong rural aesthetic with simple, bold materials is integrated throughout. This also included the salvage and re-use of materials where possible. Photos by Kieran Scott Photography. |
