Iran Visit - Part 1

1/9/2010

Tehran’s Parks & Open Spaces
Lee recently travelled to Iran in order to take part in an initial site visit and charette for a new 600 hectare resort project.

The trip was a fantastic opportunity for Lee to experience Iran during a time of intense worldwide scrutiny and form his own impressions of the country and its people. As is often the case the realities of the country are far from the impression that one gains in the media – Iran offers an amazing blend of culture, history and hospitality and a great place to do business.
As part of his travels he took time to visit a series of traditional and recently completed parks and open spaces in Tehran. The adjacent images display a brief summary of some of the highlights. Many of the park spaces have had significant input by Iranian landscape architects, architects, urban designers and artists.
Visiting these spaces provided Lee with some distinct cues as the ways in which the people of Iran gather and utilise public space and the importance that this plays within day to day life. This research will be key to the development of the landscape and urban design within our project. Of particular interest was the use and journey of water in the landscape, principles which have followed through from traditional Persian garden design.
