Bespoke were engaged by Auckland council to undertake the redesign and relocation of the playspace at Mountfort Park Manurewa.
Part of this process involved consultation with several key groups of school children in the Manurewa area to identify issues that need to be considered and addressed in preparing the design brief for the Playground. This includes ideas on how to best represent Manurewa, what age group the playground should be aimed at and the preferred play types and opportunities local children identify with.
Overall the consultation was an extremely enjoyable and fun process. Six hours of consultation saw children of all ages take the opportunity to design playgrounds that in many instances adults could only dream of. The ideas ranged from simple play opportunities such as flying foxes, climbing elements and swings to the weird and wonderful concepts such as chocolate fountains, mechanical bulls, seahorse carousels, unpoppable bouncy castles and minecraft themed playgrounds.
For the next stage of the process Bespoke will develop these ideas and aspirations together with feedback from the local Iwi and other user groups into an overall concept for the playspace. Let’s hope there are not too many disappointed children if their chocolate fountain and 10km flying fox don’t materialise!
A big thankyou for all the staff and students at James Cook High, Manurewa Intermediate, Waimahia Intermediate and Leabank Primary School for all their amazing input.
