Returning to Waiheke Island for the fifth time, the biennial Headland Sculpture on the Gulf exhibition is one on New Zealand’s premier outdoor sculpture events.
Aside from the impressive range of artistic mediums and the sheer scale of some of the works, the best aspect of the exhibition is how adeptly the works have been sited within the Waiheke landscape.
Whether nestled into native bush or washed up on a rocky cove, every sculpture has been sensitively placed to cause the least disturbance to the island, yet have a sense of belonging. The result is a seamless flow of artistic discovery along the Matiatia to Church Bay walkway, with art and landscape complementing and revealing the nature of one another.
Bespoke highly recommends Headland Sculpture on the Gulf to anyone involved in the landscape profession.
