William Green Domain
A comprehensive master planning study of William Green Domain was completed for Auckland Council in 2011 in order to provide a framework for future development of the park as both a premier sports facility and destination public space. Bespoke produced a number of options for the orientation of new artificial turf sportsfields, in addition to potential carpark expansion options to cater for the projected increase in demand for the park. These upgrades were carefully sited to minimise the impact on the existing stream corridor, trees, and ground levels. The subsequent developed design, detailed design and construction phases (by others) have resulted in a major new community sports facility that will significantly decrease the amount of rain affected days through the winter months. Bespoke were also engaged to design a playspace to coincide with the sportsfield upgrade and reinforce the public park environment of William Green Domain. The design draws on the soccer and turf theme with one half of the play area consists of an abstracted ‘soccer pitch’ with turf mounds and pipe goals. Within this a succession of custom designed sculptural players, colored to indicate two teams, are strategically placed around the field. This area provides an opportunity for children to practice their football skills, or simply run, slide and balance around the elements. Further to this a series of proprietary items are included in the play area to enhance the overall experience, theme and play value of the playground. These items include; a slide on the largest mound, stepping logs, 3 bay swing set, a seesaw and spinning elements. The play was organised to create a constant flow of play for children and opportunities for both directed and inventive play throughout. |
