TE KAPUA PARK PLAYSPACE

Te Kapua Park Playspace is located in the heart of Tūrangi township. The playspace respectfully recounts the narrative of Ngāti Tūrangitukua and their strong association with the Tongariro River, Mount Pīhanga and the surrounding rohe. This is interpreted by a sinuous path representing the Tongariro River that weaves through the playspace, with the different play zones accessible from the path representing the land that is significant to Ngāti Tūrangitukua. The playspace provides a wonderful play experience and a level of cross-generational cultural learning and understanding. Working collaboratively with Ngāti Tūrangitukua, artist Te Maari Gardiner and carver Tururangi Rowe, a high level of cultural design expression and artistic excellence was ensured, with a final result that offers a huge sense of pride to the local community.
