Peddle Thorp - 2013

PACIFIC GAMES DEVELOPMENTS PNG

The Taurama Aquatic Centre and Sir John Guise Stadium projects in Papua New Guinea provided sporting facilities in time to serve the 2015 Pacific Games. Bespoke worked in close collaboration with Peddle Thorp Architects on the concept design, developed design and construction documentation for all external areas. The aquatic facility is set into a family-oriented landscape containing both a 'splash and play' area and playground as well as shaded 'haus win' structures and grassed play areas for family activities. The design for the stadium includes large scale arrival promenades and entrances, social spaces and seating zones. Both designs take strong design cues from the local culture and landscape, and fold these into bold contemporary responses in the built form. Whilst the immediate impetus for the redevelopment was to serve the 2015 Pacific Games, both facilities are particularly mindful of future operations required to serve the local community for generations to come.
