PAPATOETOE STADIUM RESERVE
One of several initiatives to unlock Old Papatoetoe's potential, the revitalisation of Stadium Reserve aims to create a safe, attractive space that meets the needs of a growing population. The upgrade was designed in consultation with Mana Whenua and key stakeholders, and provides new social infrastructure including a new playground, basketball half court, gathering spaces, walkways, cycleways and a recreational heart for Old Papatoetoe. The retention of significant trees and enhancement with supporting planting improves amenity stormwater management in tandem with preserving important public recreation space, amenity and biological balance for future generations. The playspace design centres around the narrative, “The Mists of Kohuora,’ which is reflected in the undulating mounds within the play area, as well as the rich volcanic colour palette used in the cushion-fall areas. Additionally, a swale weaves through the play area, featuring user-activated ‘misters’ that serve both as water play elements and acknowledges the area’s naturally misty landscape.
