PAPATOETOE STADIUM RESERVE

One of several initiatives to unlock Old Papatoetoe’s potential, the revitalisation of Stadium Reserve creates a safe, attractive space responding to the needs of a growing population. Designed in consultation with Mana Whenua and key stakeholders, the upgrade provides new social infrastructure including a playground, basketball half court, gathering spaces, walkways, cycleways and a recreational heart for Old Papatoetoe. Significant trees have been retained and enhanced with supporting planting to improve amenity, biodiversity and stormwater management while preserving important public recreation space for future generations. The playspace design is centred around the narrative, “The Mists of Kohuora”, reflected in the undulating landforms and rich volcanic colour palette of the cushion-fall areas. A swale weaves through the play area, incorporating user-activated ‘misters’ that provide an interactive water play element while acknowledging the area’s naturally misty landscape and volcanic character.
